HOW IT WORKS
1. FABRICATE CHULAYA
THE FABLAB – MAKERSPACE EXPERIENCE
Chulaya stands for open source so that you can enjoy the fablab-makerspace experience. Acquire and download the digital files in the C-shop. Read the file, buy the mdf material and take it to the nearest fablab or makerspace or the one of your choice. Nowadays, a growing number of local maker labs (including makerspaces in educational centers, local libraries + co-working spaces) around the world offer the use of digital technologies, where you can personally fabricate and have your Chulaya maker project lasercut. It is a fun and awesome experience. Once the lasercutting is done, Chulaya can be assembled according to the guide that comes with the files.
2. GET INSPIRED
a. BROWSE CHULAYA’S LOOKBOOK
Now that the Chulaya maker (wheelchair) doll is put together , the next creative challenge is to envision the kind of doll you would want to make and transform Chulaya into your one-of-a kind creation. As an (aspiring) maker, it is always helpful to seek out inspiration, to spark your imagination and get exposed to new design ideas or uncommon techniques. Chulaya’s Lookbook is a great way to get started: it is a free resource.
b. DISCOVER + LEARN FROM MASTERS ARTISANS
Got inspired by the Lookbook and want to experiment with several design ideas? We offer an eGuide to try out different forms of textile craft ranging from simple stitching and hand embroidery to intricate knotting patterns. The eGuide presents creative challenges that stretch your imagination and help build your maker skills. Several creative challenges are inspired by indigenous designs and have been developed together with master artisans from textile craft communities. You can obtain the eGuide in the C-shop.
3. CRAFT YOUR OWN DESIGN
Now it is your turn. Design your own creation. Do your own thing. You may consider this to be a ´creative lab` for you to experiment. Tweak ideas, follow your hunch, play with materials, try out different techniques and enjoy the process of making. Regardless of whether you are new to fiber craft or are an experienced textile maker, you will discover that the scope of designing with Chulaya is limitless. It is up to you to push boundaries. We hope that you will have fun and experience a sense of thrill when you discover what you are capable of making. By all means: SURPRISE YOURSELF !
4. SHARE YOUR CREATION
Chulaya can be developed as a personal DIY project or as a group maker project. It is also possible to implement the Chulaya maker projects in the context of maker education for schools, libraries or museum programs. The section on maker education provides more information on this.
Let us know about your maker experience and fill us in on your creative process!
Once your individual or group creation is ready share it with us for all to enjoy and to keep the circle of inspiration growing.
